Tuition: $1,700
Registration fee: $50
Textbooks: $200 approximately, more or less if you find a used one.
Structure of costs:
The tuition covers the first 150 hours of class room instruction. The first 150 hours include 100 hours of practical training, and fifty hours of Anatomy, Physiology, and Structural Kinesiology. The Anatomy portion is similar to University freshman level Anatomy course work.
The remaining 420 hours are considered apprenticeship. These hours include 70 hours for sanitation, record keeping, reception training.
The apprenticeship period includes mandatory weekly classes; two hours per week. These are free, but mandatory.
Then, the apprentices 350 hours of practical massage is performed by practicing massage on each other or friends they bring into the studio. Once the apprentice reaches a level of competency to practice on paying customers, they will be allowed to provide student massages to paying customers. The customer understands that the therapist is a non-licensed student.
It is against Hawaii State regulations to pay apprentices, so this is considered training with feedback. The customer will read an evaluation form prior to the session, and, after the session, the client will write down their response to the massage on the evaluation. Then, the client and the student will talk about it. So, each massage is performed in an analytical, learning way. The point is to use the students goals, provided by the school, and the clients feedback for a dynamic learning process. This also allows the student to develop a more interesting rapoir with the client, so it increases the chances of the client remaining loyal to the student down the years.
The 470 apprenticeship hours should be completed by the six month period. Hawaii state regulations state that apprenticeship must be completed in not less than six months, and not more than 12 months. Apprentices will get hours from clock - in to clock -out, so long as they are actively engaged in either studying, practicing, watching instructional videos, or taking classes. Workshops taken at other locations will count towards the total 470 hours.
Apprentices who appear lazy, and just hang around might be asked to leave and get their hours elsewhere.
